Wangan Township is located in the south of Penghu Islands and is composed of 18 isles with a total area of 13.7824km2. The population of the Township is approximately 4,500. Islands that people inhabit include the following six places: Wangan Island (administration divisions are separated into four Villages of Dongan, Xian, Zhongshe, and Shuian), Jiangjun-ao Islet (Jiangjun Village), Dongji Island (Dongji Village), Dongyuping (Dongping Village), Xiyuping (Xiping Village), and Huayu (Huayu Village). Terrains of the islands are flat and plain, with no high mountains or rivers; its coastline is curvy, and the sea nearby is rich with sunken reefs and perilous ocean currents. The highest elevation at 79m (Damaoyu) is the highest point in Penghu County. Rainfall distribution throughout the year is uneven, and most of the rainfall is concentrated between April to September of the Lunar Calendar. The average annual rainfall amount is merely 1,000mm, so droughts are fairly common. From October to March, Northeast Monsoon are quite fierce, bringing drastic impact on agricultural and fishing production as well as overall transportation.

        Wangan Island’s external traffic access is fairly convenient: over the sea, there are three private shuttle boats – Guangzheng No.21 (for both passenger and cargo use) and Guangzheng No. 3 and Guangzheng No. 8 (passenger speed boats), which travel between Wangan and Magong to pick up and drop off the passengers every day. In addition, there is also the “Star of South Sea” shuttle boat offered by the Public Transport Management Office, Penghu County Government, which travels amongst Magong – Wangan – Cimei every day. Besides the main island, there are township-governed third-level offshore islands, including the four Villages of Dongping, Xiping, Dongji, and Huayu, which all need to rely on sea transport for external traffic access. In addition to the regular shuttle boats provided by the Township, in case the Township residents require emergency transports due to urgent healthcare needs, they can also report to the Township, and we would coordinate and assign shuttle boats for emergency pick-up and drop-off to and from hospital under our doctrine of “saving lives first.” Moreover, whenever residents or tourists have the need, they could also hire small private ferries for charter service. Concerning air transportation, currently, Daily Air Corporation is providing direct flight services between Kaohsiung and Wangan using small aircraft. In addition, in case of emergency use, the service of charter flights can also be applied. Township people’s needs for convenience can thereby be met.
