Introduction to Wang-an Township |

Our township is made up of 18 islands located south of the Penghu Islands. Total surface area is approximately 13.7824km2 and the total population around 4,500 people. Only six islands are inhabited, these being the Wang-an Island (divided into four administrative districts: Dong-an, Si-an, Jhongshe, Shuei-an), Jiangjyunao-yu (Jiangjyun Village), Dongji-yu (Dongji Village), Dongyuping (Dongping Village), Siyuping (Siping Village) and Huayu (Huayu Village). The islands are generally flat and unremarkable with no high mountains or rivers. The shoreline is very uneven and the nearby waters are full of hidden reefs and dangerous currents. The highest point is 79m above the sea level (Damao-yu) and this is also the highest point in Penghu County. Local rainfall is very uneven with most falling between April and September of the Lunar calendar. As total annual rainfall is just around 1000mm, the area is subject to frequent droughts. The northeasterly winds blow very strongly between October and March of the following year causing serious disruptions to agriculture, fishing and transportation.

Wang-an Island enjoys relatively convenient links to the rest of Taiwan. Privately-operated shuttle boats Guangjhen XII (passenger and freight), Guangjhen III and Guangjhen VIII (high-speed passenger boats) shuttle passengers between Wang-an and Magong every day. The "South Sea Star" shuttle boat operated by the Penghu County Public Vehicle Ship Administrative Office also makes a round-trip of Magong-Wang-an-Cimei every day. Apart from the main island, there are also several level 3 offshore islands administered by the township, including Dongping Village, Siping Village, Dongji Village and Huayu Village. These 4 islands rely on ships for transportation as well. Apart from scheduled runs operated by the Township Office, in the event of an emergency a shuttle boat can be diverted to evacuate the patient for treatment. If necessary, local residents and tourists may also hire privately-operated ferries to travel between the islands.
The township's air transportation currently consists of direct flights between Kaohsiung and Wang-an by small aircraft operated by the Daily Air Corporation. If necessary, local residents may also apply for a specially chartered flight.

The township's natural landscape offers a wide variety of picturesque scenery perfect for those who enjoy the outdoors and the beach. A brief description of the more notable features is provided below.
1. Beach Fun
Wang-an Island features a long, white sandy beach that runs from "Wang-ankou" in the southeast to the "Changlaizai" at the southwest tip. This beautiful beach is perfect for swimming and playing with sand. In the summer, tourists throng the area and many choose to camp here at night as well. Looking up at the moon and starry sky, you almost feel as if you have discovered a Shangri-La by the sea.

2. Green Turtle Eco-Tour
The long sandy beach running from the southeast side of Wang-an Island to its southwest tip offers a perfect breeding ground for green turtles. Every summer the turtles arrive to lay their eggs and several dozen nests containing 100~140 eggs are counted every year. Due to the animal's rarity, the area has now been declared a national eco-reserve.
When the season for egg laying comes around, trained conservation workers are hired by the Township Office to patrol the beaches at night. Tourists wishing to visit the area must undergo an orientation session provided by the conservation workers before they can enjoy this unique ecological experience. As this is the only breeding ground on the island and the green turtles' arrival times are very unpredictable, a lot depends on luck. Some people spend several days and see nothing while others come across a turtle laying eggs on their only night. This is a perfect illustration of the fine line between "disappointment" and "unforgettable". Why not come and try your luck?

3.Tour of the Jhongshe Historic House
Jhongshe Village is located north of Si-an Village and was originally known as "Huajhai". Over time though people moved away so most of the homes became abandoned and thus avoided demolition and renovation. Today, Jhongshe is one of the few areas in Taiwan with a well-preserved collection of traditional historic private houses. In recent years the area has become very popular with artists, photographers, architectural professors and students. They now visit the area to paint, take photos, draw or carry out academic research. The Jhongshe Historic House is therefore one of the must-see destinations on any tourist's itinerary.

4.Distant View from Tiantai Mountain
The Tiantai Mountain north of Jhongshe Village is the highest point on the island (53m). The top is quite flat and open, and offers command views over grassy plains, endless beaches and patterned rock formations. From here you can enjoy panoramic views of nearby islands as well.
On the top of the mountain is a rock that local legends say is imprinted with the footprint of an immortal. Some say it was left by Lu Tungpin when the Eight Immortals crossed the sea, while others claim it was left by Lee Tie-guai the Bare-Footed Immortal. Needless to say, the truth may never be known. Weathering has now made the footprint increasingly indistinct. Due to the wonderful views from the top of Tiantai Mountain, it has become a popular tourist attraction.

5.Snorkeling, Fishing and Crab Watching at Budai Port
Budhai Port is a superb natural anchorage and was once a busy port of call for sailing ships. Motorized boats have now replaced sails so the sight of the harbor filled with tall masts is now no more.
Shoals of fishes make the Budai Port their home. Their wide variety and many colors draw swimmers during the summer seeking to snorkel or swim with the fishes. Due to the rich fishery resources, the area is also popular with fishermen as well. A nearby area has also been declared land crab reserve.
These areas have now been listed by the Tourism Bureau's Penghu National Scenic Area Administration for recreational development. Once the project is complete, it will offer facilities for snorkeling, fishing, land crab watching, barbecue, accommodation and dining, making it a perfect place to go for fun and relaxation.

6.Barbecue and Camping at Yuanyang Caves
During the Japanese Colonial Period, the Yuanyang Caves were an important military base. A patrol boat base was planned but the project was abandoned when Japan lost the war. The two caves dug for the base are now called the "Yuanyang Caves", with the gentle sea currents and clear waters making it an excellent place to swim.
The government has built pavilions, public toilets and a camping area here to cater for tourist demand. Visitors can now therefore enjoy swimming, barbecues and camping in this area.

7. Jiangjyun Island Round Tour and Coastal Fishing
Jiangjyunao-yu (Jiangjyun Village) is just one nautical mile away from Wang-an Island and motorized boats carry people and goods between the two. While Jiangjyun Island is just one-fifth the size of Wang-an, they have roughly the same population so Jiangjyun is clustered with high-rise buildings. This has given rise to its nickname of "Little Hong Kong". The island itself is surrounded by extensive fishery resources while a round-island/coastal road has also been completed. This means it's perfect for a round-island tour to see the sights or fishing along the shore.

8.Mao-yu and the Seabirds
Off the coast of Huayu Village to the southeast are the uninhabited Damao and Siaomao islets. Damao-yu is a irregularly shaped islet that at distance looks like a crouching cat, hence its name. It rises up to 79m above the sea level and is the highest peak among the Penghu Islands. The island itself is home to very rare seabirds and is now Taiwan's first wild seabird reserve. It is also a breeding paradise for seabirds and when the silver herrings are in season between June and July of the Lunar Calendar, terns and other seabirds arrive in droves. Tourists can take boats out to the island to watch the seabirds cry and compete for food from a distance. The sight of seabirds diving and turning against the sunset at dusk makes for wonderful photo opportunities.
At its peak, tens of thousands of seabirds nested on the island and the way they covered the sky was a very magnificent sight. As this was an experience that can only be experienced in person, the area has become a popular bird watching destination in recent years.

9.Sea Views at Cyuanfan-yu.
To the east of Jiangjyun Island is an islet shaped like a ship sail, hence the name "Cyuanfan-yu". At low tide, this towering rock formation is connected to the Jiangjyun-ao and offers a very impressive sight up close. Tourists can stop by to enjoy the sights.
